In my post on bad sports injuries the other day, I completely forgot about Alex Zanardi. Perhaps it was because his crash was so horrific, so terrible, that it was shut out of my mind. But back in 2001, in the first sporting event in the wake of 9/11, Zanardi was leading a race in Germany when he went to the pits. Coming out of the pits, he accelerated and his car spun out onto the race track. There, helpless, he was t-boned by another race car going about 200 mph. Both of his legs were severed and as rescue workers tried to save him, he managed to lose about 75% of his blood. Somehow, miraculously, they were able to save his life. And today, with prosthetic limbs, he is back racing cars! Amazing. Worst car accident I've ever seen. Even worse than Tom Pryce.
